VELVET SHORELINE PRODUCTION WORKSHOPS "Large studios can be extremely costly and intimidating to the artist. I've been through all that. Like when we (Carey’s former band, Torben Floor) recorded with a big name producer in an expensive studio only to eventually scrap the recordings altogether. That experience and many others like it have motivated me to start a lo-fi workshop that does what big, expensive studios and top engineers rarely do. That is, encourage the artist and take good care of the song."...Carey Ott Velvet Shoreline Production Workshops is a production company that offers its clients a one-stop shop involving pre-production, production, writing, co-writing, arranging, engineering and recording. It is a unique process that was developed by Dualtone recording artist Carey Ott <http://www.careyott.com>. Carey's portable home studio includes pro-tools on a Apple IBook Laptop, an FMR Audio Mic Pre and compressor, a Boss DR - 880 drum machine, various expensive guitars and amps, percussion, condenser mics from Rode and Audio Technica, and other assorted instruments. But this isn't just a recording studio. This is an intensive workshop where the song and its performance is valued over expensive gear and fancy equipment. Carey Ott in an interview with OneTimesOne.com- 1X1: “After seeing your Stax shirt in the picture on your record I’ve gotta ask: Were you exposed to soul music when you were young or did you seek it out on your own as a listener?” Carey: "Honestly, I never appreciated it as a youth. Probably because radio always hammers the same 10 or 15 tired Motown tracks down everyone’s throat. I was never exposed to the good, obscure stuff. A few years ago, I got this CD called “Raw Soul” with a music magazine and I was hooked by the infectious energy and authentic raw sound. To me that is as real as music ever sounded; Old soul music like Ike and Tina, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Otis, The Staple Singers. Great songs, too.” “I started thinking about why that stuff sounded so good. Some say it’s the old, analog gear, or the recording techniques. I say it’s because the recording and production always took a back seat to the actual song and its performance. Some of these recordings are, technically speaking, downright awful. But, when the song and its particular performance is right, the production will sound amazing.” Carey calls his studio a "workshop" because it is a custom-made, one-on-one experience that focuses on the art of song writing and arranging, the subtlety of crafting good lyrics and simple, elegant production that make songs sound fresh instead of typical and “slick.” A few listens to Carey's Dualtone debut cd, "Lucid Dream" will illustrate some of Carey's writing and production skills. He wrote all the songs and was deeply involved in the production of all the tracks along with esteemed producers Ray Kennedy (Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Ron Sexsmith) and Ed Tinley (Liz Phair, Ike Reilly Assassination.) He has had songs featured on ABC’s “GREY’S ANATOMY” and is played regularly in STARBUCKS’ national rotation. His back catalogue is extensive and he was the main writer and driving force behind the two CD's, “Live in the Apartment” and “Matinee” that his former band Torben Floor recorded and released independently to critical acclaim. Our fees are based upon the clients needs. They start at a guaranteed fee of $300 / day with a four day minimum, 10 hours per day. For clients with a higher budget, there is the option of implementing live drums and a higher fidelity recording through Carey's publisher's recording studio. This is an excellent multi-track studio <http:///www.cal4.com/studio> conveniently located on Music Row in Nashville. It is equipped with a vintage set of Gretsch drums along with an array of Zildjian Cymbals and a choice of 7 different snare drums. Carey plays a bit of everything on his recordings but he also has an "A" list of Nashville's top session players at his disposal if the need arises. A typical session lasts 4-5 days. Clients usually arrive in Nashville the day before the sessions start and check into a bed and breakfast near by to settle in. The workshop begins the next day with 10-12 hours of co-writing / arranging and pre-production. At the end of the session, clients typically leave Nashville with 2-3 completed songs. But what past clients have immediately recognized is that they leave with much more than just recordings. Carey is happy to let clients in on his own unique approach to writing and producing as well as share insights gathered from over 12 years of writing, recording, and producing experience. This production concept and its results have drawn sincere accolades from previous and ongoing clients as well as highly esteemed peers in the industry. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
